HOW DO STUDENTS READ AND WRITE?

Everyone tends to associate the Braille system of ‘raised dots’ materials with people who are blind. Braille is one essential means of reading and writing for those unable to read regular print. Some students with useful ‘residual vision’ use large print (about twice the size of regular print), closed circuit television (CCTV) which magnifies words and letters up to 26 times the size of regular print, and/or special optical devices such as high-powered lenses.

Our overall aim is to encourage each student to master the most appropriate communication systems relevant to his or her unique situation. After all, many of our students will either enter the public school system or function competitively with their sighted peers in work environments, so effective skills in reading and writing are vital, as well as enhancing the enjoyment.
