CONCORDIA LEARNING CENTER WELCOMES
HOLIDAY EXPRESS

Holiday ExpressJersey City, NJ – On Friday, November 18, 2011, Concordia Learning Center at St. Joseph's School for the Blind kicked off the holiday season with a roar as Holiday Express rolled into the school. More than 70 singers, musicians, and a bus full of volunteers made magic happen in the wink of an eye. The holiday extravaganza was a special event featuring Santa Claus, Cookie Monster, Elmo and the Grinch…all on hand to bring big smiles to the school’s students and staff.

Celebrating their 18th year of giving, Holiday Express is a grass roots, non-profit organization founded in 1993 by New Jersey restaurateur and musician, Tim McLoone. Motivated by gratitude and a sense of giving back to those less fortunate, McLoone banded friends and musicians together to bring the joy of music to groups throughout the Tri-State area.

Today, Holiday Express is comprised of more than 1,300 volunteers delivering music, food, gifts, financial support and friendship to adults and children who are physically and mentally disabled, living with AIDS or homeless as well as isolated elderly and others in need.

From November through December this extraordinary group brings approximately fifty “interactive private parties” to clients who might otherwise be overlooked during the holiday season. Their events include a rock’n’roll band, costumed characters, choreographed parodies, crafts, games, food, good cheer, gifts and lots of hugs!

For the children at Concordia Learning Center, Holiday Express offers the perfect beginning to a magical holiday season. Concordia Learning Center, the only school for the blind in New Jersey, offers comprehensive services for students with blindness, visual impairments and multiple disabilities, ages 3-21 and an early intervention program for infants from birth to 3 years of age with vision impairments and possible multiple disabilities. The school also provides a pre-school program for 90 non-disabled 3 year- old children from Jersey City.

Under the guidance of Concordia Learning Center teacher and professional artist, Bojana Coklyat, the students present a vibrant array of paintings and sculptures designed and created from feelings of love, hope and the desire of self-expression. The exhibit will also feature works from Ms. Coklyat, a recognized artist who is legally blind and a champion of the disabled.

According to Ms. Coklyat, “When I paint, I don’t just see with my eyes, I see with my imagination, my heart, and with every cell of my body.” Teaching her students to work the same way, each canvas sparkles with colorful dreams and vivid imagination. To 14 year-old Concordia Learning Center student Omar Tzic, “Art is a feeling language” and speaks what the eyes can not see. The exhibit, which showcases more than 30 paintings and two original sculptures, is an expressive display of the importance of art as a means of social expression to those who are blind/visually impaired.

The opening is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25, 2011 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

The Justin Charity Bear Fund Visited Concordia Learning Center

On a recent visit to Concordia Learning Center at St. Joseph's School for the Blind, eight year old Justin Martin explained that “….every child needs to have a bear of their own, especially children who are sick.” With the help of his family and volunteers this determined, compassionate young boy set out on a mission to do just that. Through his self-named charity, Justin has built and hand delivered more than 1,100 bears in 2009 and is still counting! At Concordia Learning Center, Justin and his younger sister Jade, personally delivered 62 bears to students who are blind, visually impaired and have additional disabilities. Accompanied by their father, Justin and Jade made their way to each classroom bringing their special Build-A-Bear friends and lots of smiles to each child. Founded in 2008, The Justin Charity Bear Fund has donated bears to children in hospitals, shelters and in low income areas throughout New Jersey. ST. JOSEPH’S SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND CELEBRATES NEW JERSEY’S
 FIRST BLINDNESS AWARENESS MONTH

St. Joseph's School for the Blind kicked off New Jersey’s first Blindness Awareness Month (BAM) with a gala reception on Friday, October 2, 2009 at The Manor in West Orange, honoring the school’s founders, The Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace and distinguished colleague, alumnus, and award winning sports journalist, Ed Lucas. The celebration headlined jazz pianist Ernie Edwards, a Newark resident and alumnus of St. Joseph's School for the Blind, and keyboard musician Ed Fedush who is also blind.  Jacob Webb, bass player for Edwards, and student at William Paterson University also donated his talents to the event. Renowned sportscaster Spencer Ross, a longtime friend and supporter of the School presided as Master of Ceremonies.

State Senator Loretta Weinberg presented official resolutions from the State House to both the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace and Lucas from the Governor’s office honoring them for their years of service to the blind and visually impaired.  Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise also presented resolutions and thanked the School for serving the visually impaired in Hudson County and throughout the State for more than a century.

Earlier this year, Governor Corzine signed into law a measure designating October of each year, “Blindness Awareness Month” in New Jersey.  This important legislation acknowledges the vital importance of raising awareness about the ways to prevent, treat and cure blindness and other visual impairments. According to the American Foundation for the Blind, more than 20 million Americans report experiencing significant vision loss while the World Health Organization estimates that 75% of all blindness can be treated, cured, or prevented by highly cost-effective means.

  1. Each year, Concordia Learning Center at St. Joseph's School for the Blind provides programs and services for more than 130 children from infancy to age 21 who are blind, visually impaired and have additional disabilities.

Throughout the month of October, Concordia Learning Center will be welcoming friends and supporters to our school for personal tours.  To arrange a visit, please contact Ellen M. Felicetta, Director of Development (201) 876-5432 x 113, or via email efelicetta@sjsnj.org
